Placement changes everything about a tattoo: how much it hurts, how it heals, how it ages, and whether it looks like it belongs on your body. Decide placement together with the design, not after it.
Let the design follow the body
Bodies are not flat. A forearm is a long tapering cylinder; a shoulder is a dome; the ribs curve. The strongest tattoos are drawn for the surface they sit on, which is why Ricardo will ask for a placement photo before designing a custom piece. Long vertical designs suit forearms, calves and the side of the body; round or spreading compositions suit shoulders, chest and thighs.
Pain, honestly
Easiest: outer upper arm, forearm, outer thigh, calf, shoulder blade. Middle: inner arm, upper back, chest for many people. Sharpest: ribs, sternum, feet, hands and fingers, inner elbow, knee, spine, neck. Sharp does not mean impossible, but for a first tattoo or a long session it is worth knowing what you are signing up for.
Visibility and work
Think about your job, your family and how you feel about answering questions from strangers. Forearms, hands and necks are on show all day in Jamaica’s climate; the upper arm, chest, back and thigh can be shown or hidden with what you wear. Neither choice is wrong, but decide it consciously.
How the area ages
Skin that stretches, folds or takes constant sun changes a tattoo over the years. Hands and feet fade fastest and often need touch-ups; the stomach and upper inner arm change shape with weight; forearms and calves take a lot of sun here. Areas with stable skin and less sun keep detail longest, which matters most for fine-line and black and grey work.
Size follows placement
A detailed portrait needs room to breathe, usually a forearm, upper arm, thigh or larger. Small placements demand simple, bold designs. If you love a detailed reference but only want a small tattoo, the honest options are to make it bigger or to simplify it.
Plan for what comes next
If you think you might want more work later, leave room and think about flow. A first piece on the outer forearm that could one day become a sleeve should be placed with that future in mind. That is a conversation for the consultation.
Still unsure? Send two or three placement ideas with your reference and start the conversation.
