Tattoo aftercare in Jamaica’s climate

Heat, sweat, sun and the sea are the four things that spoil a new tattoo here. How to manage each of them through the first month.

Most aftercare advice online is written for cooler, drier places. In Kingston a new tattoo has to survive 30-degree heat, daily sweat, a sun that does not go anywhere, and the constant pull of the beach and the river. This is how to get through the first month with the piece looking the way it did when you left the chair. It is general guidance, not medical advice; the instructions you receive at your appointment come first.

Heat and sweat

Sweat itself is not the problem; the problem is a sweaty tattoo that stays damp and dirty. Rinse gently with clean water and a mild, fragrance-free soap after you have been sweating, pat dry with a clean paper towel and let it air. Do not seal it under thick layers of ointment in this climate: a thin layer of the recommended product is enough, applied only when the skin feels tight.

Sun

Sun is the fastest way to fade a tattoo, healing or healed. For the first month keep the piece covered with loose clothing when you are outside; do not put sunscreen on an unhealed tattoo. Once it is fully healed, a broad-spectrum sunscreen on the tattoo every time you are in the sun is the single best thing you can do for it, especially for black and grey work, which relies on soft gradients.

The sea, the pool and the river

Stay out of all of them until the tattoo has fully healed, usually four to six weeks. Salt water, chlorine and river water all carry bacteria into open skin, and soaking softens the healing layer and pulls out ink. If you are visiting Jamaica for a tattoo, plan it for the end of the trip, or accept that the beach days come before the ink.

Clothing and bedding

Loose, breathable cotton over the tattoo; nothing tight or synthetic rubbing on it. Sleep on clean sheets, and if the tattoo sticks to the sheet in the night, wet the fabric with water and peel it away slowly rather than tearing it off.

Exercise

Light activity is fine after a day or two. Avoid the gym floor, contact sports and anything that stretches or rubs the area for the first week or so, and rinse the tattoo after any workout that makes you sweat.

The itch

Around day four to ten the tattoo will flake and itch. Do not scratch, do not pick, do not peel. Slap it lightly if you must, or a cool, clean cloth over the top helps. Flaking skin carrying a little ink is normal; the tattoo underneath is not going anywhere.

When to get medical help

Redness that spreads outward after the first couple of days, heat, swelling, pus, a bad smell, red streaks or a fever are signs of possible infection. See a doctor promptly; do not wait for it to “settle”. Then tell the studio.

The complete week-by-week version is on the aftercare page.
