The whole piece is built from a single black: solid black in the open mouth, the stripes and the pupils, layered greys through the fur, and the highlights on the nose, teeth and whiskers left as bare skin. That contrast is what lets the tiger read from across a room and hold its shape as it heals.
Placement does the rest. The head is centred on the fullest part of the shoulder, so the muscle gives the face its volume and the stripes follow the arm downward rather than fighting it. Photographed fresh, straight after the session, in the Kingston studio.
