A lion is one of the classic cover-up subjects: the mane gives the artist a large area of dense, dark texture to place over the old tattoo, and the face gives the client something they actually want to wear. The rose extends the composition so the whole area reads as one design.
Session one puts down the structure and the first layer of shading. The second session builds the depth that makes the old work disappear.
