The calf is a tall, tapering surface, and the phoenix is one of the designs that suits it best: a vertical composition with a natural top and bottom. Here the body of the bird sits on the fullest part of the calf, the head and crest reach towards the back of the knee, and the tail narrows with the leg.
The feathers are worked in layered greys with solid black in the deepest shadows, so the bird keeps its structure as the piece heals and settles. Two views, photographed fresh.
