Cover-ups are designed around what they hide. The old tattoo sat on the lower back, so the tree’s roots and the base of the trunk, the darkest and densest part of the design, are placed exactly there, and the composition grows upward from that point across the whole back.
Session one lays down the outline and the first shading, so the client can see the tree take shape and the artist can plan the second sitting. The second session adds the depth that finishes the cover: heavier shading through the roots, texture in the bark and the fine work in the branches.
