The back is the largest canvas on the body, and a tree is one of the few subjects that uses all of it naturally. The trunk follows the line of the spine, the roots spread over the lower back, and the branches reach into the shoulders so the piece moves with the body rather than sitting on top of it.
The blossoms are the only colour in the piece. Against the black and grey structure they lift the crown and give the tree a season. A large, multi-session commission, photographed after the final sitting.
